Sun or Shade

April 28, 2011 — 9 Comments

It is very important to know what the needs of a plant is before you purchase it and plant it in the ground.  There are typically 3 types of qualifications of those needs…Sun, Shade, or Part Shade.

Sun:  is when the sun is shining on the area all day long with no hope of relief

Shade:  is when the area does not get direct sunlight on it at all or maybe just a few minutes.

Part Shade:  is usually when the area gets good long morning and/or early afternoon sun, but is in the shade during the heat of the day.

So, the next time you read a label on a plant, think about where the sun goes down in your yard, and you will be just fine.

Happy Sunning

  1. i have an uncle and his daily works is to plant a coconut trees and doing investment on the fruits he used to harvest. He study the direction of the sun and the sunlight that strikes into that areas. So his harvest is profitable. All the coconut trees he planted bear a lot of fruits. You have to be sure that the plants you are planted, should exposed on the sun, so that the plant will get enough sunlight.

  2. I think plants really need the sun.Plants need the sun because sunlight is made up of electromagnetic radiation which is given off as energy as the sun burns through its stores of hydrogen many millions of miles away from Earth. The electromagnetic radiation that plants receive from the sunlight that reaches Earth and penetrates its atmosphere is the key ingredient in a process that is called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is important because it is the way in which plants derive their energy.

  4. Yeah, that's solid advice for the newbie to gardening. I guess the seasoned gardeners know about the 'preferences' of plants when it comes to the exposure to sunlight. It's always great to see that you get the best results if you listen to nature and follow it through.

  6. A lot of Gardener does not have this idea of sun, shade and part shade whereas it is very important for a plant to survive. If you can judge the area's sunning nature, you would be able to choose the right plant to grow.

  7. Yes, you are very right. It is really nice to know what "sunning" preference the plant requires before you actually purchase them. That way, you will also know if they fit well in your garden.

  8. I am agree with the point you have raised in this article that we should know better about the requirement of plant before planting here and there. But most of the time people don't care it in first place.
