Fall Display

If you live in zone 6 or 7, it is not too late to overseed your lawn.   It is critical that if you want a thick lawn next spring, to overseed now!  Overseeding now allows for winter root development and for you to begin a weed control program in February.

Don’t forget the lawn starter fertilizer!  This will increase germination of the seed and strengthen the good grass that already exists.

Many people like to set out fall displays in their yards to make it look like fall.  Many people use a handful of straw bales, some mums in bloom, pumpkins of many shapes and colors, and even a scarecrow or two.  These displays are fun to make, inexpensive and really add some extra interest to the fall season.

Depending on when the first frost comes, you should be preparing your lawnmower for leaf season.  This would include sharpening the blades, cleaning the air filter, and even putting up a guard on the discharge to help mulch up the leaves.

Be ready to clean up the veggie gardens after the first frost.  You can give them one good tilling this fall just to get rid of any weeds or roots that were left behind, or plant a rye grass that will be tilled in next spring for compost material.  Either way, you garden will be toast this month.

October is a good time to give your foundation shrubs one last good pruning.  This always makes the house look good for the whole winter.  It is also a good time to put an extra layer of mulch and pre-emergent down to freshen the look and prevent winter weeds.

With the temperature being down the middle of the road, October is a good time just to have fun and play in the yard.  Planting new plants, dividing old bulbs, transplanting existing plants are all things that can be done right now.  Enjoy, don’t be scared of your yard… your plants will love you for it.

Happy Fall
