I suggest using crushed stone... 1/4 inch down to dust. I don't use any sand when I do pavers. Too much chance of movement when sand is underneath. Use the sand as the 'mortar' for the blocks. Good Luck

I am about to start this project. It is not a large patio area, just 7' x 9' and it is encased on three sides by existing concrete. I have been told just to put more concrete in but I like the idea of the pavers to make it look different. I have been told the look will be patchwork looking. I am going with it though. I am still a bit confused on the stone to put underneath and have read all kinds of different suggestions. Some say layers -, put stone then sand then pavers then sand to fill up the pavers. Some say use cr6 then stone dust and then just a little sand over the pavers. I didn't even know what cr6 was. You suggest just stone, then pavers and sand over and between.

That is a good question. I usually have to get what ever the homeowner wants. The big box stores carry Pavestone, and Castle stone. I am a dealer of Sim's Stone, which I love. I have friends that all they do is hardscapes, and they have about 5 other stones that they like, but won't tell me all the names of them. I say, get the best block for the best price.
